MSU Health Care Partners with Greater Lansing Food Bank to Tackle Food Insecurity

February 15, 2021

MSU Health Care and the Greater Lansing Food Bank are partnering to mitigate food insecurity in the mid-Michigan area. When people think of donating to food banks, it is often during the holiday season. Food insecurity happens year-round, however, food banks experience a drop in donations during the rest of the year. Together, MSU Health Care and the Greater Lansing Food Bank hope to reverse this trend.

Food donation buckets are now placed throughout MSU Health Care clinics. These buckets are for boxed and canned good donations to help stock the shelves at the food bank. The locations of these donation buckets are listed below. Cash donation cans will also be located in every clinic for anyone who wishes to make a monetary donation. The Greater Lansing Food Bank relies on community support to keep their operations running. In 2020, the food bank served 10 million meals to those in need and collected a million pounds of food in December alone.

MSU Health Care understands that not everyone is in a position to donate and may require food support themselves. This is one of the main reasons this partnership was created. Working with the Greater Lansing Food Bank will help bridge the gap that may exist between MSU patients and getting the help they need. Informational handouts about the food bank will be available in our clinic locations with a list of resources and how to access them.

The organizations are also working to develop ready-to-go food donation boxes that patients and family members can take home with them on the day of their appointment. More information on these efforts will be announced at a later date.

Healthy food and proper nutrition provide a solid foundation for childhood development and overall health, making this partnership a natural fit. Eliminating food insecurity is a worthy cause and supports our mission to improve the health of our community.

MSU Health Care and the Greater Lansing Food Bank are excited about this partnership and believe this will have a positive impact on the community. For more information about the Greater Lansing Food Bank, please visit their website: www.greaterlansingfoodbank.org.
